Limited-Scope Representation

Limited-scope representation, or “unbundled” representation, has become more popular in recent years. Essentially, limited-scope representation allows our firm to represent you on certain parts of your divorce case while you represent yourself on other parts. For example, you might only want representation at a particular hearing or only want to consult with us from time to time.

Limited-scope representation can also be defined by particular issues in an entire case. For example, you might want to represent yourself on child custody and visitation issues, but have us represent you on property division issues.

We can also prepare forms and other court documents, but have you file them yourself while you represent yourself at the hearings. We can coach you on how to represent yourself at the court hearings and help you prepare the evidence that you will present in court. We can also help you with the more difficult parts of your case, such as discovery and legal research, while you do the simpler tasks yourself. By only paying our firm to do certain tasks, you can save quite a bit of money on attorney fees and costs.

Limited-scope representation is, however, not for everyone. If the case is complex and there is a lot at stake, there is a lot to lose. Our firm can help you identify the “landmines” at an early stage in your case, so you can avoid a mistake that could get more costly as time passes. For example, a child support order based on incorrect information could cost you hundreds or even thousands of dollars each month until the child becomes an adult.

If you have questions about whether limited-scope representation is right for you, it is important that you discuss your rights with an experienced family law attorney. If you wish to schedule a consultation with Andrew J. Botros, APC, call us at (858) 422-1377.
